Introduction
The Old and New Testament Survey course is designed to provide students with an overview of the Bible’s structure, themes, historical context, and key theological messages. This curriculum is ideal for ministerial training, Bible study groups, and theological education programs.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the historical, cultural, and literary context of the Old and New Testaments.
- Identify key themes, characters, and events in each book.
- Recognize the theological significance of the Old and New Testaments.
- Develop an appreciation for the unity of Scripture and God’s redemptive plan.
- Equip students with foundational knowledge for further biblical studies and ministry.
II. The Old Testament (35 minutes)
- Structure: 39 books divided into:
- The Law (Pentateuch/Torah): Genesis – Deuteronomy
- Historical Books: Joshua – Esther
- Poetic/Wisdom Books: Job – Song of Solomon
- Major Prophets: Isaiah – Daniel
- Minor Prophets: Hosea – Malachi
- Key Themes:
- Creation, Fall, Covenant, and Law.
- Prophecies about the Messiah.
- Israel’s history and relationship with God.
- Major Figures: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Isaiah, etc.
III. The New Testament (35 minutes)
- Structure: 27 books divided into:
- Gospels (Matthew – John): Life and ministry of Jesus Christ.
- Acts of the Apostles: The early church and the spread of the Gospel.
- Epistles (Letters): Romans – Jude (Pauline and General Epistles).
- Revelation: End times prophecy and Christ’s ultimate victory.
- Key Themes:
- Fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies.
- New Covenant through Jesus Christ.
- Salvation by grace through faith.
- Major Figures: Jesus Christ, Apostles (Peter, Paul, John), early church leaders.
IV. Conclusion and Discussion (10 minutes)
- Recap of key themes and connections between both Testaments.
- Q&A session to address student questions.
- Application: How does the knowledge of both Testaments impact Christian ministry?
